I thoroughly enjoyed reading this and was smiling from the start – a brilliant story! After twenty years as a farmer, he turned to teaching and then to writing children’s books. Now when Max speaks it all comes out topsy turvy and wrong hence the name hodgeheg as that is what he says he is! The book addresses death within the first sentence which can be a sensitive subject.
Children could also create a story board to recollect the events in the book, they could also write their own backward sentences, playing with language. It would be better to read aloud as smaller children wouldn’t be able to read most hodgehegg as it’s mixed up speech and would be very confusing.

Max also has incredible eyesight, managing to see several details, even at night. It is read both for pleasure and jodgeheg a tool for learning in literacy. I was surprised when I discovered tHat I didn’t remember all that much about the story, but I thought that added to my enjoyment.

The book also teaches children some valuable lessons about road safety, how to look after hedgehogs and demonstrates in some cases social skills and how the hedgehogs build a strong relationship with their neighbours. This results in Max’s speech becoming mixed up and his sentences not forming properly. Max’s determination may come from a place or bravery or ignorance.
